A1 Judo Club was founded in 2009 with one simple goal: to make judo accessible to everyone in our local community.
What started as a small local club has grown into one of East London’s established family-run judo clubs, welcoming hundreds of children, adults and families through our doors over the years. From complete beginners taking their first breakfall to competitors representing the club at regional and national events, every member has played a part in our journey.
Located in the heart of Newham, we are proud to serve one of London’s most diverse communities. We believe that every child and adult, regardless of background, ability or experience, deserves the opportunity to benefit from the values that judo teaches.
At A1 Judo Club, we believe judo is about far more than learning throws and winning medals.
Our club was built on the philosophy that judo develops confidence, resilience, respect and self-belief for life. Every session is designed to help members become stronger not only physically, but mentally and emotionally.
Whether someone joins us to improve fitness, build confidence, learn self-defence, make friends or compete at a high level, they are welcomed into a supportive environment where everyone progresses at their own pace.
Our coaching philosophy is centred on:
Over the years our club has continued to grow through strong relationships with local schools, families and community organisations.
Our experienced coaching team includes judoka who began their own journeys as children at A1 Judo Club before progressing to become qualified coaches themselves. This reflects one of our greatest achievements—developing people, not just athletes.
As a family-run club, we understand that every child learns differently.
We are committed to creating a welcoming environment where children can develop confidence at their own pace. Our coaches work hard to ensure sessions are structured, encouraging and enjoyable, with clear routines and positive support that help children feel safe and successful.
Many families tell us that the confidence, discipline and resilience their children develop on the mat positively impacts school, friendships and everyday life.
More than fifteen years after opening our doors, our mission remains the same.
We continue to inspire people of all ages through the values of judo while providing high-quality coaching in a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.
Whether your goal is to earn your first belt, improve your fitness, compete nationally or simply be part of a supportive community, A1 Judo Club is a place where everyone can learn, grow and achieve.
Respect. Courage. Discipline. Community.
These values have shaped our history and will continue to guide our future.
